Somali Pirate Years

Ok, here's an annual look at that archive of piracy data, still focused around likely Somali piracy around the Gulf of Aden.  The seasonal maps showed a surprising amount of within-year variation in the areas sharked by piracy.  But an annual look paints a much sharper picture of overall trending in numbers and territory.

Check out 2008, breakout year of the Somali Pirate...

In 2008 pirates worked the northern shipping lane en masse -pretty much out of nowhere, it appears. But check out the following year when they shifted their focus to the lane just south.  2010-on shows a general expansion up into the Red Sea (2012's data runs through August 28)...
